Reconnection of the Heresznye sidebranch has started

After extensive preparations, the on-site implementation of the side branch reconnection, necessary due to the riverbed degradation of the Drava, has started.

The work is currently underway on the Hungarian section of the Heresznye side branch. The work machines are carrying out the widening and deepening of the former side branch, and the excavated material is reloaded, thereby alleviating the sediment shortage in the river, which is the cause of the riverbed degradation.

The upper section of the side branch falls within the territory of Croatia. Here, the works can commence in the autumn of this year after the necessary permits and procurement processes have been completed.

East of the Heresznye high bank, the Drava actively shapes its surroundings: significant erosion occurs on the left bank, while on the right bank, sandbars are being formed. With the opening of the side branch, further dynamic development of the riverbed is expected, which is a key characteristic of healthy rivers and provides an opportunity to create optimal living conditions for various species.
