Black locust plantation replaced by natural tree specimens

The extent of natural forests will be increased by planting oaks in a plot covered by the non-native black locust.

The extent of natural forests will be increased by planting oaks in a plot covered by the non-native black locust.

Previously, alien black locust was planted in a plot next to the Gyékényes Forest House in Lankóc Forest. One of the aims of the project was to replace this stand by native, locally dominant tree species. Logging of black locus has started in August 2019, later saplings of common oak and saplings of common ash was planted in January 2020.

The stand will be fenced to protect it from wildlife, the yearly tending of young forest will be done as prescribed, supplemented with further forestry works and regular removal of appearing black locust sprouts. Owing to the activities in the project and beyond, a semi-natural forest will grow within some decades.
